How to Deal with FOMO: Finding Joy in the Present Moment
How to deal with FOMO
Hey there, fellow adventurers on the journey of life!! How’s it going? Having FOMO?
Today, we’re diving deep into the world of mindfulness and discovering how to find joy in the present moment.
Universal Fact: we all have FOMO
First things first—let’s talk about FOMO. We’ve all experienced it at some point, that nagging fear of missing out on the latest trends, events, or social gatherings. It’s like a relentless itch in the back of our minds, whispering tales of all the amazing things we could be doing if only we weren’t stuck in the here and now.
But what if I say we can make all the tables turn (and yes, that is pun intended) with just one blog post?
How to deal with FOMO: Fear of Missing Out to Embracing JOMO: Joy of Missing Out?
Wait a minute.
Who in the world has fun while missing out in life? We all want the full experience. We all desire the gossip, the tea and the laughter with our friends. It’s natural to want to feel included and connected. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of the inside jokes, the spontaneous adventures, and the unforgettable memories that come from being present for every moment?
Here’s an example:
Say, you didn’t go to one of your friend’s birthday party because you were busy at a family gathering which you were forced to go to (to make it even better, your favourite cousin didn’t show up). The next time you join your friends at a get-together, they share an inside joke about something that happened at the party.
You have no clue what they are talking about and also have no option but to stare and them and feel ostracized from the group.
Even if they do fill you in about it, you would still feel in the pinch of not being aware of it, even if it wasn’t the tinniest bit your fault. As a bonus, you would be pissed off at your parents for forcing you and your cousin (who must apologize to you later lol).
Hear me out!!!
However, the truth is: no one can ever experience everything in life. All of us miss out on some or the other thing. The only thing we can do is to enjoy the present moment to the fullest, and not care about the past or the future.
So, if it is impossible to experience everything, why are we finding faults in ourselves when we miss out on opportunities?
Instead, let’s embrace the Joy of Missing Out.
Here’s how to deal with FOMO and embrace JOMO:
- forget about what you are missing out on. think about what you can do with the time you have on your hands. use it innovatively and strategically to find joy in the present moment.
- who cares? one missed party or event does not decide how your life is going to be.
- unplug and unwind. the more people we see on social media enjoying themselves without us, the more excluded we feel. so take a break from the digital world and use it to recharge your batteries.
- remember that so many people in life are temporary. they come and they go. but some will always be there for you, and they are the ones who truly love and care about you. show gratitude toward them. surround yourself with people who lift you and bring out the best in you.
- it’s okay to decline invitations or opt out of activities that don’t align with your interests or values. practice saying no with grace and confidence, and remember that prioritizing your well-being is not selfish—it’s essential for your mental health and happiness.
- just smile. even if you have to force yourself. just smiling even on your worst days can change your mood instantly. go ahead and boast those glistening teeth out (excuse me, but i am crazy).
- forget about what others are doing. just go and treat yourself to a stand-up comedy.
So, the next time you find yourself torn between the allure of Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and the call of Joy of Missing Out (JOMO), remember this: life is too short to spend it chasing after someone else’s idea of happiness. True joy comes from within, from embracing who we are, and where we are, and finding joy in the present moment. Learn how to deal with FOMO and enjoy JOMO.
Cheeeeeeese!!!! 😁
